Issues Associated With The Hip

Posted by Gregory Fraser on September 27, 2011 at 12:00 PM

The hips might be considered as one of the body’s less credited part. Medically referred to as “coxa”, they carry the weight of our upper body and provide stability so we can walk, stand or run. Also, it allows the legs in space to be mobile and it is responsible in transferring the upper body pressure to the lower limbs. It can greatly affect normal activities if afflicted with injuries or diseases. One of the most common problems of the hips is osteoporosis. Sooner or later, a person with osteoporosis will have her hips go through a surgery which will make them interested with the fact that an osteoporosis drug is said to lessen the risk of a hip replacement.

In the United States, hip fracture is a common injury and one of best option in the management of hip injuries is a total hip replacement, given that the sufferer can withstand the conditions of the procedure. Surgeries will always have risks and complications involved especially with reports that there are defective devices out there just like the allegations being thrown on the DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system. As we age, our body’s normal defenses will significantly weaken and diseases will be sprouting like a bunch of mushrooms. Osteoporosis and other diseases of the joints are common and they are usually found in the upper age group around 65 and above.

Management of Hip Traumas

As mentioned, total hip replacement is one of the best choices in the management of hip injuries. However, the search for less invasive procedures is on since most of those who’ll have surgery are around 65 and up. Hip Replacement Surgery is a procedure that is done to get rid of the injured part and will be replaced with a hip device. Its main purpose is to relieve the individual from pain and improve or resume the functional ability of the hips. The prognosis for this procedure is good but the complications due to defective devices can be alarming. The allegations on the metal-on-metal product by DePuy, Pinnacle can serve as an example. According to some patients, they suffered difficulties in mobility and anything that requires pressure on the hips because of premature loosening of the device. Metal toxicity has also been associated with the device as metal bits may enter the patient’s bloodstream. In fact, more and more people have filed a DePuy Pinnacle Lawsuit to be compensated from all the sufferings that they’ve had.
